Sir Edward Dallingridge

Event

Sir Edward Dallingridge appointed Keeper of London

Richard II was frequently in dispute with his barons and citizenry. Unhappy with the citizens of London’s growing independence and disgruntled at their unwillingness to loan him £1,000, Richard arrested the Mayor, his sheriffs and several leading citizens. In the mayors place, he appointed Edward Dallingridge, the lord of Bodiam as keeper of London. Sir Edward was appointed on June 25, with Gilbert Mayfield and Thomas Newton acting as sherifs. The role of keeper was to govern the citizens of London and provide equal justice to all of them. Sir Edward swore an oath to protect the Londoners rights and restore old rights that had been lost. This displeased Richard II, who promptly replaced Sir Edward in July with Baldwin Raddington.
